In the last two years, banks in Germany have introduced stricter account opening conditions, yet this is not surprising, as upon a new EU directive banks in other EU countries also put up barriers to account opening.
The most critical element of all these new requirements is the existence of a German home address, since, if general managers plan to do business with German companies in Germany, the bank expects them to physically be present where the company is registered, in order to fulfil their duties as general managers.
But before company founders get completely discouraged by the lack of a German home address, it is worth mentioning that there are still some banks that do not insist on an address as much as others. Such financial institutions include Postbank and Sparkasse, where a verbally outlined good business plan has a good chance of resulting in an entrepreneur account opening.
We, therefore, advise our customers to try and apply for an account, even if they have no address. If, by chance, they are unsuccessful, they can open a Fintech account (e.g. N26) or we can also help them find a German address.
In case our clients buy a German company for sale, that already has a bank account, they still have to deal with the difficulties of the account opening process, as the bank closes the entrepreneur account in the event of a change of management.
